The Address Engine provides an enterprise addressing authority that allows addresses to be tracked, stored, managed and accessed through a central repository. The Address Engine melds mapping technology and database technology to create a composite application which solves many of the current limitations of existing addressing within cities and counties. Some of the characteristics and advantages of the Address Engine are as follows: - The system differentiates between physical addresses that must exist within the jurisdiction and logical addresses) that can be located outside of the jurisdiction - Logical addresses can be validated using third-party validation systems such as Code-one from Pitney-Bowes for CASS certification - All physical addresses can be located on a map - The Address Engine supports that concept of relationships between physical addresses (e.g., unit addresses can be connected to building addresses and building addresses can be connected to the parcel where the building exists) - Aliases for addresses are supported (e.g.; a building that sits on a corner lot may be referred to by an address on either street) - Many of the common data fields in the address database can be derived based on geographic data, thereby making it easier to detect and manage changes such as annexations, changes in zoning, tax jurisdiction and voting precincts - Because a single stretch of roadway can be referred to by many street names, aliases are supported allowing for both a preferred name, and any number of alternative names - Both Geocoding and reverse geocoding are supported, allowing users to specify a location and have the system calculate an address for that location, or specify an address and have a map indicate the location of that address The Address Engine is currently being used with several counties as a central addressing authority. Broomfield, CO utilizes the Address Engine to create, store and manage a swide range of address types. Nash County, NC is utilizing IPM and the Enhanced Addressing Tools to create a single process for parcel-related data entry. Farragut Systems is implementing a comprehensive system for Mecklenburg, NC that includes an integrated enterprise-wide addressing component. Enhanced Addressing ToolsFarragut has built a number of tools within Integrated Parcel Maintenance that allow for more efficient input of addressing during the parcel maintenance process. These tools also allow addresses to be input directly into the Address Engine at the same time that GIS parcels and CAMA accounts are created.
